I have my face in a gorse bush because it smells so good!

Encouraging great stories and supporting great storytellers is what I love to do.

Do you need
help with your:
  • comic book (this is my favourite!)

  • essay

  • short story

  • land acknowledgement

  • non-fiction book

  • something else?

Yes? Then I'm so glad we found each other!
My services
  • Do you need someone to read your manuscript and give some initial feedback? Maybe your story isn’t done yet, maybe it’s finalfinalFinal2forreal.doc, but you’re still not sure it’s working. Maybe you just need someone to tell you you’re on the right track (or advice on how to get back on!)--I can do that.

I read a portion of what you have so far (depending on length, this could be your entire story) and provide you with my first impressions and an idea of whether or not I believe it’s ready to publish or submit to agents, etc. (normally a few paragraphs).

Sometimes having a fresh pair of eyes on a work can be all you need to nudge you down the path you were looking for. This option can lead into discussions for next steps including more critical reads, more thorough edits, or whatever else you decide you need from me.

  • This is where we ensure that the story you want to be telling is the one that’s on the page. An in-depth service that provides you with lots of juicy feedback.

With this option we have an initial chat so I can understand your goals for your work. I read your entire story and provide you with comments directly on your manuscript as well as an additional document that discusses the work as a whole. This document will go into detail about each component of your story including voice, character, worldbuilding, plot and structure. I tell you what works and why, and I tell you what doesn’t, and why, providing suggestions on how to fix it! We then have a follow-up chat where you can ask further questions about my feedback.

This stage could require reworking and rewriting your manuscript, but the final result will be a story you can feel confident about. And of course, you’re under no obligation to accept my suggestions, and I love pushback and discussing the nuances of writing and editorial choices, so let’s talk!

  • The classic editor service. I go through your manuscript and edit for grammar, language, cohesion, flow, accuracy, and consistency. All those little niggly bits that we tend to miss when we’ve read something 7 million times.

I use Track Changes and add comments directly on your manuscript so you can see every change I make/suggest.

We can go back and forth with this until we’re both happy there is nothing more to be done!

  • If you need help getting a story from initial idea to final product, I can do that. This is especially useful for projects that require a team of creatives working together, like a comic book or an anthology.

I can work with you to plan and develop your idea, help create an achievable timeline and communicate deadlines to the team, monitor progress and help solve issues impeding that progress, and make sure we reach that final milestone of having the finished project in your hands (or whatever and wherever it may be!). I can also be responsible for communicating with publishers, press, or any other external stakeholders for the project.

I love doing project-based work and am so excited to talk to you about your idea!

  • Research is my guilty pleasure. It’s what I do in my spare time and it brings me great satisfaction.

If you need any research done–maybe to get that visual detail right in your comic, or to understand just how many petticoats a fisherman’s wife wore in 1790–get in touch. I’ve done everything from incredibly in-depth research about mourning attire and etiquette for the middle classes in 1900s London to collecting contact names and email addresses of as many local comic book shops I could find in the USA. I have provided Pinterest boards of fashion research for comic books about pop stars to providing transcriptions of Victorian business ledgers. Historical research is my main jam, but I’ll research anything. Just get in touch to ask!

What writers say
about working with me

“I came to Katie with a difficult editorial assignment with a tight deadline and fear everything in a project was about to explode. She approached the task intelligently, sensitively and promptly, and it resulted in a much improved comic and a much calmer me. That's everything I want from an editor.”

Kieron Gillen, writer (DIE, The Wicked + The Divine, Once and Future)

“Katie has been my editor on different projects over the years, and working with her is always deeply rewarding. Katie has a knack for apprehending the intent of my work, and helping me refine and fulfill its potential. Collaborating with her always makes me feel both understood and valued.”

Damien Patrick Williams, researcher, professor of philosophy and data science

My Prices

Some of my services are charged hourly, others are a set sum or paid by project milestones. If you’re working with a budget, let me know and we can arrange something that makes both of us happy. I also offer a sliding scale for my fees and provide more information about that in my initial email. So get in touch!

About me

I have over twenty years of experience editing writers to make sure their writing does everything they want it to. I believe editing is more than just correcting grammatical errors and typos—I make sure your writing makes sense and achieves your goals in a way that suits both you and your audience.

I ran my own publishing company for several years publishing non-fiction anthologies and comic books. I have experience managing projects from the initial idea to having the finished product in your hands. I’ve managed projects with just one author to projects with over twenty!

I have a BA in English Language and Literature, a qualification in training and teaching adults, and soon will have a second BA in History and Politics.

I have a keen interest in history, science fiction and fantasy and I like to spend my free time learning semi-useless skills like drystone walling and making paint from plants. I split my time between Canada and Scotland and can edit both North American and British English.

A portion of all profit I make through my editing business is given to mutual aid initiatives for trans people and humanitarian aid efforts in Palestine.

I am also a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and am continually working on upgrading my skills.

Let’s work together.
